Australian Visa Requirements for Hong Kong Citizens

Hong Kong is one of the 9 countries whose citizens are eligible to apply for an electronic travel authorization or ETA. However, there are certain requirements that need to be met in order to safely travel to and from Australia without encountering unnecessary issues.

According to the Australian Home Office, there are certain conditions that need to be met in order for any foreigner to be granted a visa to enter Australia. Failure to meet these conditions can mean an automatic denial of your ETA application. These requirements include:

  • Traveling on a passport that is valid for at least three months from the date of arrival in Australia
  • Being free of any diseases that may be threatening to the Australian public
  • Upon entering Australia, travelers must not need health care or community services of a costly nature
  • Upon entering Australia, travelers must not need health care or community services that deny Australians and permanent residents in Australia the same treatment
  • Must not have a substantial criminal record
  • Must not be traveling with the intent to molest, harass, intimidate another person
  • Must not endanger any part of the Australian community

It is important to note that you may be required to go through medical examinations to prove that you meet the proper health requirements in order to be granted a visa. You may also be required to prove that you fulfill the necessary character requirements as well.

What Visa Do I Need to Travel to Australia from Hong Kong?

The Australian Home Office provides different types of visas depending on your specific travel needs. If you are looking to travel as a tourist or for business purposes, you will need to apply for and obtain an electronic travel authorization or ETA. The ETA can have a validity of 3, 6 or a maximum of 12 months and is valid for multiple entries into Australia. The ETA cannot be used to work in Australia, it only allows you to travel to and within Australia.

How Long Does It Take for an Australian ETA to Be Approved?

Once you submit your visa application for processing, it can take up to three days for you to be granted the ETA. Sometimes it can take longer than that, depending on if there are any additional screenings required or any documents that need to be presented in order to ascertain your eligibility to obtain a travel authorization for Australia.

How Do I Apply for an Australia ETA from Hong Kong?

Applying for an ETA is very simple: you have to go the Australian visa website and click on the green button that says, ‘Australian Visa Application’. It will take you to page where you will be asked to enter some biographical information, including your name, date of birth, and country of citizenship. You will also be asked to enter your passport details along with a valid email address and phone number. You need to have a valid debit/credit card in order to have your application submitted and processed. Make sure that the information you enter in the application matches the information shown on your passport otherwise you risk having your authorization invalidated upon arrival in Australia. Once you provide all of this information, you can expect to receive your ETA via email after all the processing on your application has been completed.

When you receive your ETA via email, you should keep an electronic copy on you mobile or handheld device and take a printed copy with you to the airport when you travel. You will be asked to provide both your passport and the ETA to the Australian Border Force officials when you arrive.

Before arriving in Australia, all foreigners are required to complete an Incoming Passenger Card or IPC before they land at the airport. The IPC asks you among other things about your contacts in Australia and the address where you will be staying. You will also be required to declare cash above a certain amount that you are bringing in and other customs and quarantine-related declarations.

After you are cleared for entry, your ETA will be attached to your passport and this will allow you to travel within Australia and return should you leave before your ETA expires. It is very important that your passport remains valid while you are in Australia at any time. In the event that your passport expires while you are in Australia, your ETA will become invalid and you will not be able to renew it from within Australia.

Please note that an ETA does not allow a person to work, but you may engage strictly in volunteer work. If your phone number or email address change at any point while you are in Australia, you are required to let the Australian Home Office know of this change as soon as possible.
