Australian Visa for Portuguese Citizens

The Australian eVisitor for citizens of Portugal is an online visa that permits Portuguese nationals to travel to the Commonwealth of Australia.

Australia is not only the sixth-largest country in the world by area but also the mainland of the Australasian continent. With around 37,000 kilometers of coastline, several international airports and ports, there are many access points to Australia.

Except for citizens of New Zealand, who are granted an electronic Special Category visa (SCV) on arrival, all other travellers planning to travel to Australia will need to possess a valid visa or travel authorisation.

Depending on the country of origin, there are two main types of online visas for Australia: the ETA subclass 601 visa available for citizens of 9 countries and the eVisitor visa subclass 651 available for nationals of some European countries, including Portugal.

Do Portuguese citizens need a visa for Australia?

As with travellers from most European countries, Portuguese citizens need to apply for an eVisitor visa to travel to Australia for tourism or business.

The eVisitor was introduced in 2008 to streamline the visa application process for nationals of the European Union that are planning short stay travel to Australia. The visa allows travellers multiple visits over a period of one year, for a maximum of 90 days for each stay. Entry in the country is allowed both via air and sea.

While paid work in Australia is not permitted when entering with an eVisitor, this type of visa does allow for general business inquiries, to negotiate or review a business contract, or to attend seminars or conferences (if the participation is not paid for). Unpaid volunteer work is also permitted as well as studies when these are not the main purpose of the visit.

The benefit of the Australian eVisitor for Portuguese citizens is that it eliminates the necessity of going in person to an embassy or consulate to apply for a visa, waiting in queues and filling in a paper application.

Portuguese nationals who plan to move to and/or work in Australia must obtain a residence visa and/or work visa from an Australian embassy or consulate.
